MOONSTRUCK: Ancient Therapy or Pure Lunacy?

Lord Shiva, the Moon’s Lord

Study of the heavenly bodies has been ritualized within nearly every culture the world over. In tandem with storytelling, folklore and even organized religion, within astrology’s rich pantheon of signs and symbols we find living archetypes which instill cultural values and cautionary tales. Astrology’s treasure chest of terms and metaphors, contrary if not liminal in their meanings, have come to permeate nearly every sector of society. In the glyphs of the twelve zodiac signs one finds vast, evolving vessels of esoteric knowledge. In times past astrology’s primary use was the medical diagnosis of illness and disease. Long ago, astrology paced besides astronomy, not only playing a definitive role in daily life, but existing at the heart and center of scientific method. Astrology has led to developments in mathematics, medicine, botany and chemistry. During the Middle Ages, not only did medical prognosis and treatment rely upon information gleaned from the planetary positions, but universities had established chairs of astrology, and for students of medicine, it was a required course.  In the root of the word influenza (Latin for ‘influence’) we find that medicine, from the outset, was influenced by the celestial bodies. The Moon regulated bloodletting, which is no coincidence considering the intimate correlation between female menstruation and the lunar phases.

While in ancient times it was primarily the arena of the educated elite, astrology’s growing popularity today reflects how technology and user-generated content such as memes has fueled the democratization of the art, making astrology accessible to the masses. For thousands of years, only royalty and the most wealthy of families were able to afford astrology services. Court astrologers were a mainstay of the Roman Empire. Into the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, members of the ruling-class used astrological predictions to assuage natural disasters such as floods and hurricanes, divine political or financial gains and generally speaking to control public opinion. Queen Mother Catherine de Medici of France built her personal astrologer an elaborate tower for viewing the stars and constellations. King Frederick II of Denmark gave his astronomer a salary and a private island upon which to conduct research. During World War II, the German government employed six astrologers to their aide. While the rise of Christianity saw study of the stars come to be associated with ‘evil’ and thus forbidden throughout Europe, Christianity’s most revered of religious texts remain strewn with cosmological references. As astrology went underground for nearly a 700-year period in the West, meanwhile, astrologers of the Islamic and Hindu world kept right on chugging, making scientific advancements in the field still used around the world today by contemporary practitioners.

While Western astrology has unique merits, the Vedic system is technically more accurate and refined, being more aligned with the true laws of nature, the lunar cycles and the ever-changing Universe. Called Jyotish ‘the science of light’ in Sanskrit, one distinguishing factor of Vedic astrology is that it puts more emphasis on the position of the Moon. While our Western zodiac centers the Sun and slices the pie by twelve, the Vedic system recognizes a total of twenty-seven divisions of the sky called Nakshatras, meaning ‘lunar mansions’ or ‘stellar phases.’ Each moon mansion represents thirteen degrees of the zodiac and is represented by a star or constellation. While the Sun is bright and powerful, the Moon’s power cannot be underestimated. Not only do the lunar phases control oceanic tides, the human menstrual cycle in women and the water in our bodies – they have influenced agricultural practices for centuries. Considering that the human body is 60% water and the Earth is 71% water, the Moon has a huge domain! In fact, popular opinions about lunar-energy as ‘passive-aggressive’ and ‘crazy’ only seem to highlight our current culture’s misunderstanding of lunar power.

Lord Shiva

In Hindu myth, Lord Shiva is considered the ‘Moon’s Lord.’ Known by thousands of names like Wild God of Plants, Lord of Creatures, Celestial Intelligence, Lord of Dreadlocks, Thousand Eyed, Blue-Throated One, Lord of Time, Lord of the Waves, Lord of Dance… Shiva is a Father, ascetic and teacher. Enthroned upon his female consort Shakti, he is nothing without his Goddess half, symbolic of his ‘energy’ and ‘power.’ One cannot  speak of Shiva as ‘he’ for he is Ardhanarishvara: The Lord who is half-woman. Shiva fits no category and has no caste, existing outside the social order when not galavanting through cremation grounds. Typically depicted with the crescent moon adorning his hair as a jewel, Shiva’s namesake sakala ‘’with parts and nishkala  ‘undivided, without parts’ draw meaning from the waxing and waning of the Moon. The term ‘kala,’ (Sanskrit for time/death/black) associated with Shiva and his Warrior Goddess consort Kali, has the alternative meaning of ‘fraction of the moon.’ In India the the Moon’s day Somavara (Monday) is associated with Shiva, as well as the day proceeding the new moon.

Before mass-production and profit became paramount, gardeners and farmers alike played by the Moon’s rules when planning for an abundant harvest. Just as the tides are highest during new and full moon phases, seeds, too, will absorb the most water. During a 29½ –day lunar cycle, during which the Moon is waxing (growing in illumination) or waning (decreasing in illumination), living organisms thrive or dwindle accordingly. Plants with external seeds should be planted when the Moon is waxing, root crops when the Moon is waning. When the Moon reaches its darkest point; this is a resting period for plants, a time of slow growth ideal for weeding, just as it is the best time for the female body to shed the lining of the uterus ala the monthly menstrual cycle. Under a dark or new Moon, it best to turn inward and meditate.

While culturally here in the West we seem to aspire to all of the characteristics associated with the Sun – always striving for bigger, better, brighter – the western zodiac’s solar-center isn’t an excuse to stay at surface level. Such a sun-centric focus is not a terminal approach to reading the stars. While the popularity of daily horoscopes based on the sun-sign may have made astrology more accessible, most modern astrologers agree you’d be better off checking your rising sign in the daily horoscope column, or both. While the sun-sign is a good entry-point, it shouldn’t eclipse the importance of assessing the whole 360° zodiac when reading a natal horoscope. But here’s where most people get overwhelmed. Wouldn’t it just be so much easier and more straightforward to reduce our infinite limitless soul to one sun-sign associated with our masculine energy and ego, very much on par with the emphasis of Western individualism and its values of achievement, progress and singularity? Ironically, our western hemisphere’s need to freeze and simplify the heavens means our tools no longer reflect cosmic accuracy. Like many of our cultural myths, the Western tropical system works because us humans have breathed life into it for so long.  In this article, we’ll be looking at the Sun’s feminine counterpart, the Moon – although she is not recognized as feminine universally in all cultures (more on that in my Summer BEAUTYSCOPE “The Original Solar Power”)

Egyptian Moon God Khonsu

According to astrologer Kaypacha, the Moon is our past, very much like the mystical PhD we came in armed with at birth. Our yin/Moon energy represents the inner reflective self – the chalice and vessel that holds and supports the energy of your yang/Sun. If the Sun is our conscious creative outpouring into the world, the Moon is our inner stirrings – our ever-fluid subconscious, drawing in and receiving every subtle-most vibration, like an invisible web reaching out in all directions on all planes. The Moon is irrational and illogical, hence the root ‘Luna’ (Moon) in the word lunacy (crazy). The Moon is not only our inner child and inner needs, but as we grow, becomes how we mother and nurture – the ‘fertile crescent’ we came to share with others.

If our Moon is where we come from (our Mother) the key is learning to use our Moon energy as a springboard of the future self without getting overly attached to what we know. Our Moon energy becomes an issue when we become stuck in it –  knowing it so well, we simply can’t leave Mother’s comfortable embrace. If you’ve got your Moon in it’s ruling sign of Cancer, you’ve got Cancer down. You’re emotional, intuitive and feeling. You’re compassionate and understanding of others, always merging with your environment. If you’ve got your Moon in Virgo, you’ve got Virgo down. You’re very analytical, clear and precise. You’re a conscientious worker that wants to do things right.  What the Virgo Moon needs is to balance that energy out a little bit, leaning into the Pisces polarity to find faith, surrender to love and trust in the greater universe.

Tsukuyomi, Moon God of Shinto & Japanese mythology

With the Moon moving into Scorpio today, just in time for All Soul’s Day, Day of the Dead and Samhain (the Gaelic festival celebrating the half-way light point mid fall equinox and winter solstice), let’s talk about the Lunar Scorpion. It’s surely one of the most powerful placements of all, evidenced in the fact that Beyonce, Bob Marley, Nelson Mandela, Lady Gaga, Will Smith, Bruce Lee, Elizabeth Taylor and Björk all have a natal moon in Scorpio. In her report on today’s New Moon, astrologer Sarah Vrba reminds us that Scorpio is often bigged up in the popular imaginary as a type of shadowy ghoul character with an outsized lust for money, sex and power. In fact, the healed Scorpion, the eagle or phoenix of the totem, offers the world one of the most gentle and kind energies imaginable, what Vrba calls a “New vision in technicolor” and “Rainbows in the room.” She insists that this powerful new moon is about assessment. Post-eclipse season, we are called to acknowledge the closing of karmic cycles and lessons learned. What new well of inspiration is your soul calling you to dip into?

While Scorpio suns often dominate the popular chatter, they don’t hold a candle to the Lunar Scorpion. The reason being that Scorpio energy is beyond the self-consciousness of the Sun. Meaning, we don’t activate Scorpio energy as an ‘I’ chasing motives, we activate it at the level of the deep unconscious. Exalted in Taurus, the Moon enters its detriment in Scorpio’s underworld. Scorpio penetrates deep in it’s search for truth – compulsively – and along the way is attracted to what it fears most. Latent fear of death drives the Moon in Scorpio native to constantly probe for the true motives of others. Scorpio grows up sensing that something is not quite right, and likely developed extremely defensive behaviors as a result. What others perceive as ‘natural poise’ is – at the most base level – withheld sexual tension. With Scorpio, an unbearable, perceived lack of wholeness causes a furious search for one’s ‘other half.’ Sex (procreativity/life) becomes Scorpio’s mode of defense against death. In sexual orgasm, the ‘little death,’ Scorpio can seemingly pierce to the very mysterious center of existence. At the peak of orgasmic pleasure, one is transported, providing the scorpion the ego death it craves. For the Lunar Scorpion, sex is less about pleasure than actualizing a vehicle by which they can retrieve information lost and experience reconciliation (unity).

Astrologically, the Moon rules the stomach, breasts, digestion, bodily fluids and secretions. Associated with the High Priestess in tarot, the astrological 4th house and the sign of Cancer, the cyclical nature of the Moon reflects our seasonal attunement to natural tidal rhythms at humanity’s nature-based core. Around the world we find this knowledge encoded in lunar deities. Artemis is the Greek Goddess of the Moon, the hunt, wilderness and wild animals. Gleti is a Moon Goddess from the African kingdom of Dahomey, what is now Benin. Called Gletivi, she is Mother of all the Stars. When an eclipse occurs, it is said to be caused by the shadow of her husband ‘crossing her face’ as he comes home for a visit. Egyptian Moon God Khonsu means ‘traveler,’ a nod to how the Moon travels across the night sky. Khonsu is also called ‘Pathfinder’ and ‘Wanderer’ and ‘Navigator’ – being the lord who watches over night travelers. Also a god of time, healing, intimacy and love – Khonsu is responsible for the fertility of humans, livestock and crops. In his association with time, he is sometimes called ‘Decider of the lifespan,’ and ‘Khonsu the Cannibal,’ the latter referring to his Old Kingdom delineation as terrifying and violent. In some ancient Egyptian texts Khonsu is described as ‘blood-thirsty,’ having helped kings who died and became deified find other gods— and eating their hearts in the process. Hence the occasional ‘Khonsu who lives on hearts.’

In Finnish mythology, Kmnuutar ‘Maiden of the Moon,’ reveals a namesake based on the Finnish word for Moon (Kuu). In Norse mythology, Máni aka the ‘Man in the Moon’ personifies lunar consciousness while his brother Sól personifies solar-consciousness.

In the Neopagan tradition, the Triple Moon or Triple Goddess dear to Wicca practitioners represents the ‘Maiden-Mother-Crone’ trinity symbolic of both the stages of a female life cycle and the yearly lunar phases. Tsukuyomi is the Moon God of Shinto and Japanese mythology. Of noble birth, he is the brother of both Sun Goddess Amaterasu and Susanoo-no-Mikoto (God of the Sea and Storms). Long ago, Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu shared the sky as husband and wife. One day Tsukuyomi killed the Goddess of Food, enraging his sister Amaterasu to the point that she refused to ever look upon his face again. Moving to another part of the sky forever, hence forevermore we experience the separation of day from night.

Chinese Moon Goddess Chang’e

Coyolxauhqui, Aztec Goddess of the Moon/Milky Way was famously butchered by her brother Huitzilopochtli, God of War. Coyolxauhqui, which means ‘Painted with Bells,’ was considered both sister and mother to Huitzilopochtli – the male God known for decapitating and eating the heart of the Moon Goddess. In Chinese myth as well, we find Moon lore strewn with equal parts violence and magic. Celebrated in poems and literature, Chang’e, the premier Chinese Moon Goddess, sought refuge in the Moon after stealing the drug of immortality betrothed to her brother by the Gods. Annually coinciding with the full moon of the 8th lunar month, Chinese folks celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival in honor of Chang’e, eating and offering moon cakes as gifts to friends and neighbors. To this day Chinese mythology of the Moon, much like Shiva’s mythos, tends to emphasize periods of its disappearance – new moons and eclipses – interpreted lyrically as the result of one monster or another who has devoured or slayed the moon, only to later revive it. As a result, in some places there still exist cultural taboos which forbid beginning a new creative cycle – such as planting seeds or engaging in sexual intercourse – during the dark moon phase.

All that being said, one’s Moon-sign, indicated by the placement of the Moon at birth, reflects the innermost fixed essence of an individual. Our Moon may not always feel seen but is always deeply felt. If our Sun sign is what we ‘do,’ our Moon sign is who we ‘be.’ In a natal horoscope the Moon represents emotional responses, unconscious pre-destination, dream time, intuition, instincts and self-image. If astrology is a guide to action, then study of our Moon-sign is a great starting (but not necessarily a great ending) point. While our Sun-sign is about the yang-derived energy of assertion, the Moon-sign likewise shows how a person expresses themselves when in relationship, at home, at ease and comfortable. In short, in our Moon-sign we find a reflection of the life of our eternal soul…

ARIES MOON *Aura of Childlike Innocence*

Celebrity Doppelgänger: Lady Gaga

Inherently impatient, Fire Moon in Aries has an unmistakably independent streak. Instant gratification rules!  With inner passion aflame, one makes an impression in whatever one does. Enjoys confrontations and faces problems head on. No pussy-footing around when it comes to feelings. Flare-ups end as quickly as they started. While a strong personality is projected, self-confidence is variable. Easily bored, your childhood home may have felt like a battleground. You ruled the roost, or at least wanted to, and are not the most peaceful to live with! You don’t withdraw or escape when feeling down, you get temperamental. Prone to crushes and other short-lived yet intense desires. For an Aries Moon, ‘needs’ and ‘wants’ are indistinguishable. Somehow, you always have people around scrambling to help you solve your problems. An aura of childlike innocence, even when you’re getting your way again, can be quite charming indeed!

Rx: Pore Therapy Daily Toner Pads

With a Fire Moon ruled by warrior Mars, your signature energy is instinctive, spontaneous and striving. Activated during infancy when we experience our first fever, Mars is responsible for building and strengthening the immune system. Mars constellates desire, ambition, drive and how we go about getting what we want. Mars energy can help us achieve our goals and experience sexual satisfaction, but the other side of fire is aggression. Is your Aries Moon firing at the right times and places? Could unprocessed anger be weakening your relationships and diminishing your health? Present in our most heated reactions, Mars is usually linked to past trauma. This too is Mars, firing in response to long ago events, or firing back at self in the form of inflammation and disease.

Did you know that acne is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder? This means that achieving clear skin entails much more than just grabbing the latest product. Clear skin is the result of mindful, balanced eating and a properly-functioning immune system. While everybody channels unprocessed anger differently, particularly for more fiery types, acne and various other skin conditions may be a result of stifled rage. With the recent eclipse season activating ‘Wounded Healer’ Chiron in Aries, you may be feeling the burn more than most. What’s the Rx? How about ditching ‘adrenaline junkie’ mode and doubling down on Pore Therapy Daily Toner Pads by Skincare Junkie. “ATTACK BREAKOUTS WITHOUT OFFENDING YOUR SKIN,” goes the very Arien tagline for my favorite new way to clear congestion and achieve a rosy glow. Not only do these completely biodegradable pads minimize the appearance of pores and offer preventative care against breakouts, antioxidant-rich fruit enzymes and PHA gently exfoliate dead skin cells, improving overall texture and radiance. The multi-acid formula features debris-attacking salicylic acid and aloe to soothe and calm a delicate skin barrier. Hyaluronic acids in seven molecular weights attracts moisture at multiple skin depths to deeply hydrate. We all know that the natural antidote to fire is water, and with an Aries Moon, premier hydration-focused toner pads is a good way to cool the heck down while ensuring that your skin is clean, clear and ready for action.

Celebrity Doppelgänger: Pharrell

The Moon is exalted in Taurus, conditioning emotional responses, unconscious pre-destination and self-image with earthy solidity. Moon in Taurus knows how to trust. Convinced of your ideas, you are strong-willed, loyal, capable, foresighted and stubborn. Appreciates all the good things in life, especially nature. Rooted in your instincts, you feel with your five senses. Revels in material comforts, building a solid, comfortable home to feel safe and content. Caution around excesses in pleasure, laziness, sensuality or thoughtlessness. Tends to store feelings deep within, perhaps holding a grudge far too long. Slow to adapt to change and often resistant to letting go of what has already outworn its use. You possess a steadiness comforting to those closest to you. There is a serenity about you which is calming. Very romantic – your affections run strong, deep and unwavering. You expect to be pampered and want your partner to be loyal and trustworthy. Sentimental and warm, relationships tend to endure. Hangs onto a mate, even in the face of serious conflict.

Rx: Matcha Shea Super Hand Cream

Above all else, your Moon in Taurus craves comfort, pleasure and luxury. But this doesn’t always have to be about indulgent noshes or cosmopolitan splurges of fancy. When a Taurus Moon comes home to their earthy, instinctual core – barefeet in the grass, a bubbling hot tub or a favorite silk scarf caressing your neck will do just fine. In the name of natural skincare, Kure Bazaar Paris elevates your beauty rituals with nature-based deep hydration for soft, supple hands. GEMINI MOON *Keeping it Light & Bright*

Celebrity Doppelgänger: Park Ji Min (???) of K-pop’s BTS

The social butterfly of the zodiac, Gemini Moon finds oneself shifting from group to group, situation to situation. Information is the foundation of your emotional wellbeing. Feels best when actively engaged in learning. May struggle with anxiety, indecisiveness or feelings of inadequacy. Difficulty committing or opening up. A master of emotional compartmentalization, you swiftly adjust emotional responses based on the context or people you are interacting with. A curious individual with an active, versatile mind. Thinks outloud and speaks with no filter. Talent for speech or the written word. Seeks constant mental stimulation and gets bored easily. May come off as flighty – or inadvertently develop a reputation for being fickle, two-faced or unreliable. Instinctively knows how to keep things fun, talking around the surface to avoid emotional heavy-lifting. While probably very skilled at defining them, you’re less comfortable actually feeling your emotions. Rather than detaching from emotional involvement, you may find that experiencing feeling broadens your social repertoire. Infomania may extend to gossip or a weakness for scandals! You like to know what is happening in others’ lives – but are less concerned with deep emotional intricacies than with the peculiarities of circumstance and perspective. Nurtures with words, saying the right thing at just the right moment.

CANCER MOON *Demands Respect*

Celebrity Doppelgänger: Rapper Azealia Banks

This is the most subjective position of the Moon, our Mother of poetry and song, of mystery and enchantment. Luna is at ‘home’ in the sign of Cancer, its natural ruler. Sometimes called the sea-spider for its profound centering impetus which maintains and supports the kin-group, Cancer Moon, a cardinal sign full of evolutionary drive and somatic-creative-sexual initiative, experiences a powerful thrust to create a new home/house/order. Your ambition is for the social group you move in to give you due respect. Never detached – you cling to loved ones as you continually seek out security, familiarity, peace and quiet. Not above ‘beating a dead horse’ metaphorically speaking, one dislikes superficiality in all of its forms. Devoted and accommodating. Leery of change. Knows no boundaries and may act irrationally. Extraordinarily funny. Mood swings and sweet nothings.

Rx: Bee-Cause Body Bar

Although commonly associated with the crab, Cancer’s lesser known anthropomorphic archetype is the plentiful honeybee. As astro-feminist Sheila Farrant writes, Cancer’s centering quality as Matriarch was originally informed by a cluster of over 400 stars moving together as a ‘Beehive’ within the constellation of Cancer. In a world that idealizes nurturing care while assuming caretakers will provide these functions (whether or not they are compensated), the nectar of Cancerian honeybee wisdom seems to be due reparations. No coincidence how the future of humanity leans on the survival of a now rapidly dwindling existence of bee colonies. While much of the stellar honeybee mythology centering feminine Mother wisdom seems to have been lost under patriarchy, the symbolic language still serves to reinforce masculine ‘King’ of a planet Jupiter’s exaltation in Cancer.  Studied as an ideal organization by the ancients, Kings of ancient, pre-dynastic lower Egypt were called ‘One of the Bee’ and ‘Bee-Keeper.’ Inside the culture of the hive, the Queen Bee is actually called the ‘King,’ as the conventions of gender within her colony are queered.  Either way, on the path of imagination, Cancer Moon, whether sea spider or celestial honeybee, one embodies the gate through which heavenly souls descend unto Earth.

And on that celestial note, say goodbye to tight, flaky, itchy or inflamed skin with the Bee-Cause Body Bar by PhilanthroBee®

The antithesis to chemically-treated creams and lotions, the BeeCause Body Bar works with your body heat to melt into skin – harnessing the power of natural bee products to soothe, replenish and protect dry skin. Organic raw honey, unrefined beeswax, and bee propolis harvested directly from California hives are medicinal by nature. Not only does the BeeCause Body Bar feel like it just bee-longs on your skin, the moisture penetrates deep enough to create a bacteria-fighting barrier. An antioxidant powerhouse, the bar is fair-trade organic, cruelty-free, sustainably-sourced and brought to you by a female-founded philanthropic brand. Known for their medicinal products and spreading awareness around the crucial role bees play in pollinating 81% of our food supply,  PhilanthroBee also donates 20% of profits to bee keeping-conservation services.

LEO MOON *Bold, Brave & Bright*

Celebrity Doppelgänger: David Bowie

Leo Moon pulls its cosmic brilliance from the legendary relationship between the royal luminaries: Father Sun and Mother Moon. Bold, brave and unapologetically bright, a Lunar Leo draws others in by sheer magnetism. A ‘kid at heart,’ you enjoy play, fun and spontaneity, easily getting along with children at their level. Taking time out for fun and adventure is medicine for you. A sign of romance, you specialize in dreaming up vibrant ways to show others you care. Needs reassurance and affection to feel connected. It is important for you to form relationships with people who shower you with affection. You’ll look for ways to keep your romantic life alive. A partner must be demonstrative and sensitive to your emotional needs. When treated with affection, you give others the same in return. Embodying leadership, compassion, vulnerability, strength and love. Armed with uber dignity, you expect a certain level of respect from others. Passionate intensity simply aches to be expressed. Dramatic and creative, you’re seeking an outlet to pour your creative self-expression into. Work with children or ritual may provide deep feelings of reverence and devotion, bringing a necessarily creative dimension to your life. Hostess with the mostess, you’re the Queen with big shiny emotions! Moon in Leo knows it’s big stuff and wants to play, party, express and love. Innate, unwavering pride helps one aim high and follow through on commitments. Avoid a tendency of being overly demanding, dismissive or controlling, or insisting that you always get your way. If you try to lead others by thinking only about your own needs, then you will find they rebel. You will then have trouble balancing your innate need for recognition and approval with the fact that your team has turned their back on you.

VIRGO MOON *The Twilight of Self-Care*

Celebrity Doppelgänger: Nicki Minaj

Renowned for your attention to detail and ability to make plans, you’re blessed with more than enough insight and energy to take practical steps towards your dreams. A charming perfectionist with an excellent memory and sharp wit. Tendency to worry and overthink means you require a lot of soothing. Attracted to someone who has a sense of self and lives a disciplined life. You may be drawn to someone you view as a ‘project’ – what might create problems down the road, especially given Virgo Moon’s penchant to assess and criticize. At the end of the day, you like to feel needed, and when you don’t, experience it as an excessively bothersome lack-of-control! Irritation is a word you probably tend to use a lot. As a homebody who values routines and self-care, you’ve grown to become an expert analyzer of emotions. Finds emotional fulfillment when valued, needed and listened to. Talking to others who help work through emotional problems brings fulfillment. Learning self-care and realizing that no one is perfect brings emotional balance.

Rx: Ultraviolet Candle

While your signature perfectionism and criticality have formidable benefits, make sure they’re not becoming like one irritable and unwieldy stinger, striking back at you in the most vulnerable of moments. With the veil so unbearably thin this Scorpio season, your Moon in Virgo is called to light the uncertain path ahead with the optimism of faith and belief in self. What better way to lean into your balancing Pisces polarity wisdom than with an Ultraviolet Candle by PILLOWPIA. Not only does its earthy, floral aroma conjure a vivid sensory-emotional experience with a lingering effect – this candle warms your stoic heart as if playing a symphonic duet through the sensory body. Once those flirty middle notes start to play like luminous little butterflies, you’ll feel the call to fully relax and maybe even let your guard down for once.  “Light it up, darling,” goes the tagline for this truly transportive candle with top notes of violet leaf, black currant, and mandarin; middle notes of geranium, jasmine and rose; and bottom notes of sandalwood, amber and vetiver. With the holidays right around the corner, this elegant Ultraviolet stunner also makes a handsome gift, arriving as it does dressed in a sophisticated magenta sleeve. From the home accessories shop dedicated to making modern eclectic decor accessible, founder Pia Rappaport-Goldman bridges her background in art education with years of fashion industry experience to craft nostalgic pieces with enduring beauty.

LIBRA MOON *How Do I love Thee?*

Celebrity Doppelgänger: Alexa Demi

With a strong need for partnership – Libra Moon feels safe and secure in relationship. Charming, intelligent, witty, gracious and given to flirtatiousness. Wins hearts with gentle and refined ways. Striving for the best, most harmonious lifestyle can lead to much discontent. You can’t help but see flaws! Looking for that one (elusive) perfect way to lead your life can detract from enjoyment of the moment. Caution around instability in loving relationships, wavering and giving too much weight to the views of others. Moves seamlessly between partners, may even start a new romance while in the middle of another one! A cardinal Air sign highlighting the need to act, you’ll do what it takes to restore balance. Popular and gracious in most situations, you’re likely a social individual much respected for your fair-minded approach to life. Innate drive for harmony, peace and sharing may lead you to do a lot of conceding. Mental rapport is especially important for you. With an instinctive desire to bring out the best in others, you are able to smooth over any difficulty, a superpower which open doors and cements opportunities. May overemphasize the importance of relationship, feeling emotionally disturbed without someone significant in your life. Avoid acting or thinking in ways that are not always in your best interest just to keep a relationship alive. Fear of being disliked or confrontation may mean you fail to assert who you really are. Avoid habitually bending your will to please others, rather, try revealing what it is that you truly want.

Rx: Prepare Ultra Dermal Toner

In his book How to Be an Adult in Relationships psychotherapist David Richo speaks to how intimacy entails mutual mirroring (I know that one got your LIBRA MOON purring!) As OG Librans instinctively understand, mirroring allows for mutual attunement, what Richo calls “The perfect pitch of emotional acceptance and support.” It is through the power of sustained empathic attunement that human beings open to one another and ideally, achieve mindfulness and maturity in relating habits. As the sign of balance, partnership and the 7th house of marriage, in its celestial association with seven, we find that Libra energy permeates spiritual language the world over. Seven days in the week, seven moon phases, seven deadly sins, seven sacraments in the Catholic church, seven levels of purgatory, seven heavens in Islam. Shakespeare wrote about the ‘Seven Ages of Man.’ The newborn Buddha took seven steps after birth. Here in the West seven is considered lucky. Numerologically, it’s a ‘perfect number.’ But have you heard of the Korean derived 7-Skin Method? As a beauty editor, it’s no secret to my readers that Korean skincare innovations are revolutionizing the industry. A technique created to help serums and creams absorb better by applying 7 layers of toner – the method is designed to help you achieve the glass skin of your dreams. Part of the premier H2V Skincare line by Burke Williams, Prepare Ultra Dermal Toner is not only strictly for beauty-insiders, but engineered to elevate the 7-skin method to heavenly heights. A deeply hydrating and collagen-generating formula, it’s the perfect toner and essence in one – simultaneously cleansing and hydrating the skin. The ultimate hero product for any skincare routine – natural ingredients like Aloe, Copper Peptide, Lemongrass, Lemon Peel, Sodium PCA, Green Tea, Witch Hazel and Chamomile offer healing properties without stripping the skin of moisture. Use it to reduce skin inflammation or simply brighten and tighten.

SCORPIO MOON *Fire and Ice*

Celebrity Doppelgänger: Beyonce

Of all the ‘feminine’ signs Scorpio has seemingly suffered least from stereotypes under patriarchy. Pride, passion, magnetism, willpower, ruthlessness, revenge, love of secrecy! Peel away all the superficial paraphernalia and what we have is a powerful self-sovereign Queen with razor-sharp intuition and the inner strength of an army. Scorpio Moon’s all mystery – cajoling, challenging, holding all cards. A brave, independent seeker of emotional intensity. Sees beyond facades, cutting right to a person’s core. Deep-seated need for transformation leads to a powerful, emotionally intense life, maybe even seeming to attract upheaval. When accepted as an emotional need, rebirth doesn’t need to be so dramatic or overwhelming. Doing things halfway or having meaningless relationships won’t satisfy. One of the most loyal and protective partners around. Strong fear of betrayal. Seeks commitment. Enormous presence. Life is emotion-driven, yet you probably spend a lot of time controlling and mastering emotions.  Radiates strength, seeming to ‘just know.’ An exceptional radar allows one to size up any situation – or person – quickly and expertly. Use your enormous powers for intimacy and honesty, and you will be rewarded with many friends and lovers.

Achieves ambitions by amassing supporters who pave the way. Oozes allure and foreboding egotism in equal measure, bidding would-be mates to come hither at their own peril. The zodiac’s femme fatale, one appears unmoved by a potential mate’s advances, using such insouciance to bait them into working ever increasingly for attention. Scorpio invented hard-to-get, an expertise for insinuating herself into the psyche of those she desires, without so much as lifting a pinkie. All sixth sense, the fixed-water crystallization of Scorpio’s emotional life means feelings = facts. While Libra woman projects her thought forms onto the astral plane by waving her wand of idealization, Scorpio operates in the reverse, psychically drawing experience to her like a crystal ball. Scorpio Moon teaches the rest of us, by example, that less is more. Jointly ruled by Mars (fire) and Pluto (ice), the burning aggression and sexual urgency of Mars is encased in the frosty, elliptical energy of Pluto. Mythical phoenix rising, Scorpio dives from great altitudes, crashing and burning, only to rise again anew from the ashes. There is no keeping you down!

Rx: Celestial Soothing Facial

With Scorpio season in full effect, Scorpio Moon natives ought to get used to being in the spotlight. With my natal Sun, Saturn, Pluto and South Node in the sign of the Scorpion, I like to go BIG during the season of the witch. With top-tier treatment from SleekCare Spa – I not only majorly reduced redness and irritation, but walked out with a visibly luminescent face! New York City’s hottest new luxurious spa, SleekCare’s medical-grade beauty miracles deliver that dewy ample look while also taking care of your overall skin health. Virtually brand new, SleekCare Spa cut the glossy ribbon of their upper west side location just last week with a grand opening!  Fusing advanced skincare technology with personalized treatments, there’s simply no better way to cleanse, exfoliate, hydrate and revitalize – ensuring your skin is rejuvenated for many moons to come!

With the weather changing, hydration is key. Perfect for sensitive or dry skin, the Celestial Soothing Facial proves as otherworldly as it sounds. Not only did I enjoy a dreamy and relaxing afternoon complete with lymphatic massage and red light therapy, I left feeling fully rejuvenated. Known for her soothing and relaxing massages, my expert esthetician Bettina was warm and friendly, knowing just what to say without distracting me from the steamy rapture. Genuine hospitality and a blissful facial lymphatic massage later, I was simply glowing! A soothing facial designed for sensitive or inflamed skin, the Celestial Facial combines an icy cool down and custom formulated mask designed to restore the skin’s barrier and reduce irritation. While I recommend the Celestial Facial for obvious reasons, here’s a quick rundown of popular SleekCare Spa services and their benefits:

Facial and Lymphatic Massage promotes gentle detox to enhance your skin’s natural glow. By stimulating the lymphatic system, gentle pressure applied increases release of toxins and fluids from the body, reducing puffiness and a promoting a clearer complexion.  Lymphatic massage increases blood flow to the skin, delivering essential nutrients and oxygen while enhancing overall vitality. Not only does this age-old technique help to lift and tone the facial muscles, it promotes deep relaxation and reduces stress – a major, albeit stealthy culprit in many skin and autoimmune concerns!

Radio Wave High Frequency is used to stimulate collagen production and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The high-frequency current not only improves overall circulation, but has built-in antibacterial properties that help kill acne-causing bacteria – reducing breakouts and promoting clearer skin.

LED Light Therapy reduces inflammation, enhances skin tone and texture while also having anti-aging benefits. Low and behold SleekCare Spa’s private rooms are outfitted with LED-studded ‘sky lights’ which diffuse natural light with three levels of intensity: energizing, relaxing or regenerating. This means you can count on your soothing, light therapy-enhanced facial to resynchronize the circadian and chronobiological rhythms which are crucial to your day-to-day well-being.

SAGITTARIUS MOON *World-Expanding Wisdom*

Celebrity Doppelgänger: Naomi Campbell

As mutable fire, your Moon sign is one of action. Sagittarius energy harbors an innate need for variety and change and a deep calling for freedom. While your Moon describes where you feel at home, you are likely to feel most comfortable roaming free – exploring your world and expanding horizons. Determined and balanced, you’re spiritually inclined, intellectual and knowledgeable with a strong sense of justice. Love of learning and the pursuit of wisdom. You may be an eternal student, or spend much of your time with recreational pursuits that have an educational bent. Your world expands through the knowledge you acquire. Optimistic, expansive and positive, Sagittarius energy accentuates the passionate, idealistic and creative dimensions of life. Most compatible with other fire moons, you’re a cheerful companion that always puts a positive spin on things. Love of travel and fascination with foreign places. A gypsy at heart, you likely travel a lot, or seek out situations that offer contact with foreign places or cultures. You may date someone from another country or culture. Easily imagines oneself making a home anywhere in the world. Dreaming of far-off places helps you engage with your desire to be free. Experiencing other cultures satisfies deep emotional needs. Caution around becoming so consumed with what you believe to be true that you preach to others. With a tendency to broadcast your beliefs, consider whether you have a need to be right?! When pushed by an emotional undercurrent, you may share in a biased or bombastic way, trying to prove your version of ‘reality’ and convert others. Restless at times, routine life feels lifeless and dull. Dislikes being stuck in any one place for too long. You may decorate your home in an eclectic way, or surround yourself with objects that remind you of places you would like to be.

CAPRICORN MOON *Time is the Greatest Gift of All*

Celebrity Doppelgänger: Bollywood Star & Miss World ’94 AishwaryaRaiBachchan

The Moon enters detriment in Capricorn, implying that easy, spontaneous emotional connections are not your forte. Reserved at first, you take your time to develop closeness. While you have a huge heart you don’t give it away easily. Such a pragmatic approach to relationships may lead to projecting a cold and unavailable nature. Too calculating for some – for you it’s merely a realistic assessment. Emotional ties can be burdensome, and taking yourself seriously involves assessing exactly where a situation is taking you, and if that is somewhere you wish to go. For those you hold near and dear, you prove consistent, strong and true. Values family, continuity and emotional commitment. A cardinal sign of action, Capricorn is about structures, hard work and the gift of time. Values tradition, status and social position. You expect others to match your level of responsibility and capacity, respecting people and situations which demonstrate longevity and persistence. Growing up, you were probably seen as the capable one. Whether your focus is material or spiritual, you have big life goals. Where other aspects of your chart prove more freedom-loving or unconventional, voices within may be at odds. Remember that commitment and responsibility can be expressed in many different ways. Keeping a calm and collected demeanor in emotionally-charged scenarios gains the trust of others. Practicality and activity combined with a serious, responsible nature proves successful over time. Living up to your own expectations makes you feel emotionally stable and secure. Learn to take a few risks once in a while! In Capricorn’s glyph we find the deeper, innermost meaning of the sign. Symbolic of the goat’s horns, the squiggle on the right of the V suggests the tail of the fish – and Capricorn’s beginnings surfing the primordial seas. While in tarot Capricorn corresponds to the Devil, within the Chinese zodiac it is the dolphins, sometimes called the ‘Gate of Souls’ – recalling a dual nature spanning two worlds. Capricorn believes herself to be a land creature that reaches higher than any other on the peeks of achievement. She sees her opposite sign, Cancer, swimming in the seas of emotion and intuition, forgetting how she too emerged from the waters of the unconscious. The zodiac’s proverbial workaholic, Capricorn’s process of self-healing draws from the polarity of Cancer, where she discovers the unloved child within.

Rx: Rose Pink ARU Starter Kit

Ruling over the skin, bones, joints, and skeletal system – the latter association is true in light of how Capricorn, ruled by Saturn, always looks for cracks in the foundation of life. With knees strong enough to scale mountains and pearly whites agleam, Capricorn folks are lesser known for their brilliant smiles! Far too smart to become wizened by the smoke and mirrors of oral care, when it comes to the teeth, you probably won’t settle for anything less than professional-grade clean. Ready for the Rose Pink ARU Starter Kit that reduces gum bleeding, protects enamel and removes 100% more plaque compared to a manual toothbrush? Speaking for the Venus in Capricorn I share with my Father, a retired orthodontist – the dental industry is simply not what it used to be. From insurance-approved fraud to an increasing emphasis on profit over quality care (and with that, a huge decline in ethics and accuracy) I’ve found that focusing on long-term, preventative measures with regards to the health of my teeth can literally save thousands of dollars, not to mention precious time and energy. Inspired by how in nature, bees design their hives with hexagons in mind for the most efficient use of space – the brush’s various intensity levels clean the hard to reach crevices of the mouth with bristles 20x slimmer than average. Brought to you by ARU, the SoCal company revolutionizing oral hygiene. With electric toothbrushes engineered to tackle a range of issues, this game-changing Rose Pink device arrives in a petal adorned box complete with rechargeable sonic toothbrush, patented brush head and travel case. And if you’re not feeling ARU’s superior clean, the company boasts a 100% money-back guarantee. Click the link below to check out ARU’s no-frill, clinically-backed products.

AQUARIUS MOON *Objectivity is your Best Asset*

Celebrity Doppelgänger: Constance Wu

An egalitarian, freedom-loving sign – one tends to be quite detached in your emotional responses. Seeing others for who they are, you’re possibly the least emo of the zodiac. More comfortable with words and ideas than you are with the passionate dimensions of life – you prefer to nurture others from a distance, offering cool, clear and objective analysis. Avoid outright rejection of others you may view with disdain for their commonness! Staying exclusively on the outside of true emotional contact, at the deepest unconscious level, may reflect your own fear of intimacy or rejection. You’re different and you know it – you’ve got being different down. A fixed sign, you possess great focus, perseverance and endurance. Once you set your mind on something, you are not easily swayed. A conceptual and humanitarian wizard, there’s something about you that somehow ‘separates’ you from the pack. Proverbial lone wolf, you may stick to the outskirts, amplifying any tendency to withdraw emotionally. Ruler of friends and networks, much of your life is nonetheless lived out through social connections. Rising above emotional confrontation, you see the whole story for what it is. Well-respected for your social skills and virtuosity, you may feel disdain when you see others giving over to sentimental, dramatic displays. Prefers to offer time and sympathy to impersonal, collective or humanitarian concerns. With a natural talent for human dynamics – you pour energy into supporting the group – possibly at the expense of your closest relationships!

Rx: Brazilian Wax

Forgive me but something about Aquarius Moon just screams well, hairless. Polished. Sleek. And dare I say it, transhuman. If our Moon-sign is where we come from, than Moon in Aquarius is out-of-this world like a rocket. As the rebel cosmonaut of the zodiac, it’s a bit harder to distinguish this native’s past from future. Being so forward-minded and free, you want everyone else to feel like that too. Maybe it was a subconscious need to out-diva all your avatars, maybe it was polycule pressure… or are you just flexin? Full disclosure, I just got my first Brazilian last month in my private waxing suite at the EUROPEAN WAX CENTER on Fulton Street in Bedstuy. Lionette, my wax specialist, talked me through it like we had been besties for years. I can’t think of anything less awkward, impressive considering she just gave my luscious lady jungle an exfoliating facelift!

While the history of waxing can be traced back centuries to Egyptian, Roman, Greek and other nearby regions, back then women used natural ingredients like sugar and lemon for hair removal rather than wax. According to Vanity Fair, the Brazilian look rose to fame in 90s America by way of seven enterprising sisters from Brazil. Known as the J Sisters – Janea, Judseia, Jussara, Juracy, Jocely, Joyce and Jonice “ruled the cosmetological cosmos for 25 years” when their famous Manhattan salon – enshrined with privilege and exclusivity – became a haven to models, socialites and Hollywood stars like Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Tyra Banks and Gwyneth Paltrow. Depending on personal preference, waxers typically opt to leave a narrow strip or triangular section of hair at the front of their pubic region or go fully hairless. Along with skin exfoliation, benefits of the service include clearing out clogged pores and removing dead skin, reducing the risk of acne buildup and increasing blood circulation. Compared to shaving which can cause razor burn, rashes or bumps –  waxing tends to be less irritating to the skin. Regular waxing means that your pussy hairs grow back finer and thinner, with minimal irritation. That being said, I am hesitant to use the term ‘manscaping’ nor do I wish to promote hairlessness as some type of beauty standard.

As for the EUROPEAN WAX CENTER, don’t let the Eurocentric name fool you – this humble beauty hub not only specializes in bikini, Brazilian, facial, upper lip, eyebrow and full body waxing – it’s dedicated in their mission to serve the original community at the heart of Bedstuy. After the session, Lionette walked me through the center’s unique product line of cleansers, mists, scrubs and polishes – available in delicious aromas such as coconut, aloe, fragrance free and seasonal pumpkin sugar. I recommend their ingrown hair serum infused with CBD – perfect for sensitive-skin folks like me. Look ma, no rash! Not only is your first wax free – the premier pre-paid wax pass saves you over $800 annually. What began as a family-owned business, EUROPEAN WAX CENTER now boasts 1,000 locations nationwide. The company’s core values not only foster community and safe space for their clients, but make a commitment to a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment top priority. Their philanthropic partnership with Beauty Changes Lives ensures that working estheticians and cosmetology students with need receive scholarships to open pathways to advancement in the industry. Lastly, and here’s where you hear my freaky Mars in Aquarius humming – Brazilian waxes increase sexual pleasure! By removing the hair, many experience an increase in sensitivity of the nerve endings in the genital area. For the femmes, that’s an average of 10,280 nerve fibers in the clitoris alone!

PISCES MOON *Magical, Pure-Hearted Empath*

Celebrity Doppelgänger: Erykah Badu

The original EMPATH, you can’t help but reach out when you see someone in distress. You’re a pure-hearted being with magical healing ability and generously endowed psychic gifts. People are uplifted by your calming presence. With highly developed intuition, one easily reads body language. You may experience prophetic dreams, or perhaps grew up in an environment where the women in particular were known for their psychic or healing abilities. Understanding how your ‘sixth sense’ works requires giving it the time and respect it deserves. Natural affinity for the abstract or intuitive, sensing the hidden energetic currents of life, you soak up atmospheres like a sponge. A sign of mystery, sensitivity and spiritual seeking – a profoundly personal relationship with the divine makes one an outsider at times. Feelings about people and situations are immediate, accurate and intense. Accept that they provide valuable information, but can occasionally lead you astray. Learn to discern between gut instincts and emotional responses. Responds strongly to visual and emotional stimuli, finding recreation and release in the bosom of imagination. Whether you prefer to escape into a comfortable world of daydreams, or immerse yourself in Art, what activates your imagination nurtures your soul. At times you experience an exalted kind of Love which brings you into true union with another. Still, you may need to wake up to harsh realities, seeing others for who they are – not who you would like them to be.

Rx: Oceanfoam Tidal Roller

The original symbol for Pisces wasn’t the fish but the dolphins. Sacred animals of ancient mythos, these numinous sea-creatures dear to the Goddess where said to bring good fortune to women. Odysseus, the hero who dared listen to the song of the Sirens, had a dolphin emblazoned on his shield. Just as the Sirens’ song lures men unwittingly into the dangerous territory of irrationality, a Lunar Pisces in particular plays in fluctuating responsive insights and intuitions to the sky and the seas around them. Like dolphins, who have a resonating, complex, sophisticated language all their own – Piscean insights and communications are always subtle and multidimensional. As the lunar signature of the generating seas, Pisces resonates with two invisible forces of our cosmos – water an air – what bestows Pisces Moon natives with vibrational intensity and a quiet but irresistible charm. What’s the catch? To protect oneself from all this sensitivity and be respected by others, Pisces Moon must first learn self-respect. Withdrawing periodically from the demands of life and taking time to replenish is critical. If you do not recognize when the time to withdraw has come, you may find yourself unable to cope with the demands of life. And now, meet the portable self-care prop with oceanic propensity to replenish body and soul – perfect for relieving achey or tight muscles, increasing range of motion and injury prevention. Brought to you by Oceanfoam, the 20×5″ Tidal Roller is nature-made from algae and recycled materials with a unique wave-like textured surface that provides a gentle and effective massage for your body. Find relief with this roller at home or snag the travel size bundle for use on-the-go. And for the chameleon of the zodiac (Pisces is effectively an amalgamation of every sign) the Oceanfoam Tidal Roller is available in 20 color options!
